Quote/Unquote: Disabling Discipline

“As many scholars of cognitive disability and neurodivergence have already observed, academic ‘publish or perish’ cultures expect scholars to perform a specific type of cognition and standard of professionalism characterized by reactionary quickness, hyperproductivity, and eloquence. Such capacity for cognition, in conjunction with the ability and privilege to deftly navigate higher education’s many inaccessible spaces, is often framed as a rigorous qualification that ultimately becomes a barrier to entry for many disabled scholars.” (Lau, 25-26).
